10 Simple Habits of Present Moms

We all know being a present mom is about way more than just being physically there. It’s about those moments when you truly connect with your kids when you’re not just in the same room, but you’re in their world, sharing, understanding, and enjoying life together. It’s about the little things – those conversations in the car, the laughter during dinner, the stories at bedtime.

These moments are the ones that build our relationships with our kids, making them feel loved, heard, and valued. We’re not chasing perfection here; we’re striving for genuine, heart-to-heart connections. So, I’ve put together a list of ten habits that I’ve found really help in being more present in our kids’ lives. It’s not about a complete overhaul of your daily routine, but about incorporating small changes that can make a big difference.

10 Habits of Present Moms

1. Listen Actively

Active listening is key. When your child speaks, give them your full attention. Show you’re interested by nodding, asking questions, and engaging in their stories. It’s about understanding their feelings and showing them they’re heard.

2. Limit Screen Time

Cutting down on screen time helps make room for more face-to-face interactions. Set times when everyone puts away their devices. Use these moments for family activities or just chatting with your kids.

3. Quality Time Over Quantity

It’s not about how much time you spend with your kids, but how you spend it. Make the most of your moments together, whether it’s a quick game or a short walk. Be fully present during these times, focusing on your child and nothing else.

4. Stay Involved in Their Interests

Be part of their world. If they love a sport, be there at their games. If they’re into art, sit and create with them. It shows you value their passions and want to be a part of their world.

5. Plan Regular Outings

Having regular outings, just you and your child, can be a great way to connect. It could be something as simple as a walk to the park or a special trip to their favorite ice cream shop. These outings create a special space for bonding.

6. Have a Daily Check-In Routine

Whether it’s a chat over breakfast or a bedtime story, a daily check-in helps you stay connected. Use this time to ask about their day, their feelings, and their friends. It’s a simple yet effective way to show you’re there for them.

7. Eat Meals Together

Shared meals are perfect opportunities for family bonding. Use this time to talk about the day, share stories, or just enjoy each other’s company. It’s a daily ritual that can strengthen your connection.

8. Create a Family Tradition

Family traditions, whether weekly game nights or yearly camping trips, create shared memories and a sense of belonging. These traditions give your children something to look forward to and a way to feel connected to the family.

9. Be Present During Transitions

Transitions like bedtime, morning routines, and after school are key times to connect. These moments can set the tone for the day or offer a comforting end. Be there, be available, and use these times to connect.

10. Volunteer at Their School or Activities

If possible, volunteer at your child’s school or during their activities. It shows you’re interested in their life and provides another opportunity to connect with them in their environment.

That’s all there is to it, moms! Ten simple habits to help us moms be more present with our kids. Remember, it’s all about making small changes that add up to big differences in our relationships with our little ones. Don’t stress about trying to do it all at once. Pick a habit or two to start with, and go from there. The most important thing is that we’re trying, showing up for our kids, and letting them know they’re loved and important to us.
