Star-Spangled Sugar Cookies

InsiderMama.com
Sugar cookies are a classic dessert that can easily be dressed up for the 4th of July. Use star-shaped cookie cutters and decorate the cookies with red, white, and blue icing.

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Red white, and blue icing
  • Sprinkles optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla, and almond extract. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add buttermilk as needed to make the dough soft, not wet.
  • Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into star shapes with a cookie cutter.
  • Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until edges are golden. Cool on wire racks.
  • Once cool, decorate with red, white, and blue icing and sprinkles.
